Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders of fat, carbohydrate, and protein that results defects in insulin secretion, sensitivity, or both. The prevalence of diabetes patients in the world was growing along with the continuing development of diabetes therapy guideline, characterized by the emergence of a new class of oral antidiabetics (OAD). In Indonesia, diabetes was one of the deadliest chronic diseases. The aim of this research was to study the prescribing pattern of OAD at some pharmacies in South Surabaya. Purposive sampling was used to select the pharmacies in where this study was conducted. Information written on prescriptions containing OAD during July-December 2013 was collected. Data included prescriber, patient’s gender, type of name (generic or trade name), name and strength of OAD, OAD class, therapy duration, drug administration, combination of OAD, and other drugs prescribed with OAD. The results showed that the most prescribers were internist (84,3%). Woman more frequently (51,7%) received OAD prescription. Mostly, OADs were prescribed in their trade name (82,7%) with metformin 500 mg as the most frequently prescribed OAD (32,3%). Half of diabetes patient received combination of OAD (52,3%). Mostly, OAD was prescribed for 22-30 days (66,5%). Complete and clear instruction on OAD administration was found only in 34,5% prescriptions. Antihypertensive was the most frequently drug prescribed with OAD (27,9%). The results found in this research were similar with other research in other countries. Pharmacies should be aware of change in OAD guideline that may be reflected in prescribing pattern. The result of this research could be used to improve pharmaceutical services related to OAD in community pharmacies.
