Abstract
This research aims to investigate the translation strategies used in delivering the concept of Javanese cultural words into English in a novel titled Cigarette Girl. This research used qualitative research to elaborate translation strategies of Javanese cultural words into English. The data source of this research is a novel titled Gadis Kretek and the translation entitled Cigarette Girl. To determine cultural words, Nord’s (2018) claim of cultural words is the basis of investigation, and the translation strategies employed are those proposed by Davies (2003). Of 32 Javanese cultural words identified, address term has the highest number. The translation strategies found are preservation (18.75%), addition (28.12%), omission (21.88%), globalization (12.5%), transformation (6.25%), and localization (12.5%). It shows addition is the strategy frequently used in translating cultural words. However, the results indicate that localization is the only strategy that can be used to transfer concepts to concepts, namely replacing cultural words with words in the target culture with the same cultural values. Although it reduces the atmosphere of Javanese, the translation looks natural for the target readers.
