Abstract

Hospital formulary is a list of selected drugs that appropiate and economically used as a guide in prescriptions in hospital. Non-compliance toward hospital formulary resulted in patients getting the drug that is not timely because the drug might not available in pharmacy department. Appropriate selection of medicines is needed to support its rational use, mainly for patients who must take medicines for a long term-therapy, such as patients with diabetes mellitus. Medicine efficiency to patients can be seen from prescribing compliance to hospital formulary. The objective of this study was to determine the suitability diabetic outpatients prescription, both by cash and insurance (other than Askes and Inhealth) toward PHC Surabaya’s hospital formularies in 2012. The study was an observational with a retrospective descriptive analysis. Data was collected by diabetes mellitus’s outpatient prescription written by doctors who practice in PHC Surabaya’s Hospital. Results showed that the percentage of suitability of diabetes mellitus’s prescribing on April-May 2012 was 98,1%. Precribing of brand name products in the hospital was much higher than generic name products (87,8% vs 12,2%). Diabetes mellitus’s prescribing were not listed of hospital formulary in April-May 2012 was 1,9% and the diabetes mellitus medicines of hospital formulary were not prescribed by doctors in April- May 2012 was 6 branded name. In conclusion, science and new medicines always develop, so hospital formulary must have a periodical revision to have an update hospital formulary.
