Abstract
Language is an important factor that must be mastered by human being because with language human being would be able to communicate with each others. Parents should give more attention to their children’s language skills development, because that will facilitate the other skills, especially for cognitive and social skills. The mentally retarded children’s ability to gain language skills is much lower than normal children did, due to their cognitive limitations. In that case, we need a method that is able to stimulate mentally retarded children's language skills. This study examine the extend of intervention such as the game of pretend play throught interactive puppet play to improve language skills in children with mild mental retardation. The subjects of this study were four elementary school children who have moderate mental retardation disorder. The obtaining of data and information in this study are using observations, interviews, and psychological tests. The result of this study showed that there was no difference in median score of language skills before and after a given method of pretend play through interactive puppets. It is based on the results of analysis using the technique difference test Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test results obtained 0.06> 0.05. In general, method of pretend play through interactive puppets gives a positive change to the language skills, it's just that the change is not significant. Insignificant differences in language skills before and after attending the intervention influenced by several factors such as subject’s medical conditions, and the place’s conditions where the intervention is taken.
