Abstract

Cervical cancer is a disease that can be experienced by any women around the world including in Indonesia. In developing countries cervical cancer is the cause of death for almost 80% in women of reproductive age. Stress in patients diagnosed with cervical cancer, generally increase as caused by the rejection of her health condition worsened. As an effort to improve mental and emotional health aimed to enhance self-concept in clients with cervical cancer, a study was undertaken by involving role of peer group support to identify its influence on the improvement of self-concept. Support groups of fellow sufferers or peer group support to change mal-adaptive psychological response in patients with cervical cancer be an adaptive response. Design used in this study was quasi experimental using the static group comparison. The subjects in this study were women diagnosed cervical cancer with the chemotherapy treatment in Dr. Soetomo general hospital of Surabaya qualified with consecutive sampling of30 respondents, 15 in control group and 15 in treatment group. The data was processed and analyzed with the Mann-Whitney Utest. The results of this study indicate there are peer group support effect on improving self-concepts of cervical cancer patients with chemotherapy in Merak room Dr. Soetomo general hospital with significance value ofp=O,OOO. Advice can be given cervical cancer is expected to perform their reproductive function after the therapy in their daily lives.
