Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effect of perceived father involvement on delinquency in early adolescence in surabaya with emotion regulation as a mediator. This study based on Hawkins, et.al (2002) father involvement theory, John & Gross (2004) emotion regulation theory and Santrock (2014) delinquency theory. This study used a quantitative approach involving 398 public middle school students in Surabaya. The sampling technique was Cluster Sampling (probability proportionate to size). The adaptation of Hawkins, et al‟s (2002) scale, Inventory of Father Involvement (IFI) was used to measure perceived father involvement, with reliability of 0.907, which had been adapted by Rofiqoh (2018). Emotion regulation was measured using Yusuf‟s (2018) emotion regulation scale, with reliability of 0.661. Also, delinquency was measured using the scale based on Santrock‟s (2014) theory, with reliability of 0.873. WarpPLS 7.0 was used to analyze the data. The results indicated that perceived father involvement had a negative influence on delinquency with a β value of -0.291 and a significance value of p<0.01 (p <0.05). Emotion regulation had a negative influence on delinquency with a β value of -0.309 and significance value of p<0.01 (p <0.05). Perceived father involvement had an influence on emotion regulation with a β value of 0.120 and a significance value of p<0.01 (p <0.05). But emotion regulation didn‟t have a mediating effect on the influence between perceived father involvement with emotion regulation, because of the significant value of p 0.161 (p >0.05), and a β value of 0.035. Therefore, the findings in this study showed that three of four hypotheses were accepted but one of four hypotheses was rejected.
