Abstract

Periodontitis is a chronic disease characterized by the formation of periodontal pockets, gingival bleeding, and degeneration of teeth’s alveolar bone. Periodontitis is caused by infection of Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) bacteria which accumulate in plaque. Periodontitis treatment is essential to improve the quality of oral health and prevent systemic diseases. Medicines that have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects can be used in treating periodontitis. Curcuma domestica L. or commonly called turmeric is a plant from the Zingiberaceae family, which has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. The rhizome of turmeric is traditionally used as a spice in cooking and traditional medicine. Several studies have examined the anti-inflammatory ability of turmeric extract in the condition of gums experiencing periodontitis, which is prepared in a gel formulation. In this study, turmeric extract was prepared in a gel formulation and given Rhodamine Red, then it is administrated on normal and inflammatory gums. Gum inflammation in rats was obtained from the induction of P. gingivalis bacteria periodically for 7 days. The penetration study was done by administrating the sample on the gums for 60 minutes, then took the gum tissue and cut them using a cryotome. Penetration observations were carried out using a fluorescent microscope. From the results of the study, it was found that the 70% ethanolic extract of turmeric rhizome with a dose of 150 mg was able to penetrate the lamina propria layer on normal gums and inflammatory gums.
