Abstract

Clear communication and good teamwork between surgical teams are the essential keys for an operating room to run well. In 2010, WHO released surgical safety checklist to improve safety attitudes including teamwork and communication. This study aimed to determine the impact of implementing the surgical safety checklist toward communication and teamwork in the operating room. The research protocol was arranged and submitted to PROSPERO. An electronic search strategy in PubMed, CINAHL, Science Direct, Google Scholar and other relevant sources were done to obtain relevant articles. PRISMA Flowchart was used to select the articles. The screening was restricted to articles that used the WHO surgical safety checklist. Other information regarding study design, instrument tools used, outcomes and study limitations were extracted. Twenty-two articles with quasi-experimental and cross-sectional research methods were selected from 3.806 articles. Implementing surgical safety checklist can improve communication in the operating room when followed by effective communication training, reducing perception’s discrepancy and hierarchy across surgical teams and modifying the checklist. Implementing it can also increase teamwork if pursued by teamwork training and leadership support. Surgical teams should grasp that the checklist will have a good impact toward patients if coordination between them occurred. Implementing surgical safety checklist can improve communication and teamwork between surgical teams in the operating room. Meta-analysis research needs to be carried out to determine the relevance of implementing the surgical safety checklist recently.
