Abstract

Determination of the sex ratio in sea turtle population is one of the most important parameters for the corservation. The aim for this study was to identify the sex of olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) hatchlings with alternative non-invasive methods. Geometric morphometry was used to idicated the difference between sex of olive ridley turtle hatchlings, which sex were previously determined by histometry gonad and paramesonephric ducts. All data measurements in the gonad and paramesonephric ducts analyzed with independent t test. The result showed that the thickness of the gonadal cortex, gonadal medulla and diameter of paramesonefric duct lumen are reliable sex-spesific characteristics (p˂0,05). A total of 57 landmark were identified from carapace shape for geometric morphometry. The carapace shape analyzed with procrustes ANOVA indicated no different in shape (F=0,72; df=110; P=0,9) betwen males and females. This was futher supported by DFA (P>0,05) with each sex had a mean of 75% similiarity. A total of 8 principal components were produced in PCA. The first dan second principal describe 75,4 % dan 7,1 % of the total variance. Although the total variance was high, sexes were not separated and clustered over the the elliptical figure with a 95% confidence interval. The same result was also found in CVA, and the sexes were not distinguished in terms of the carapace shape.
