Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative joint disease. The cartilage that protects the bone ends begins to be damaged, accompanied by reactive changes in the joint edges and subchondral bones that cause pain and loss of ability to move. This study aimed to identify the risk of OA in elderly who lives in panti werdha in Surabaya. This research used a crosssectional research method with non-random sampling technique. The inclusion criteria were elderly who lives in panti werdha in Surabaya, who have not been diagnosed with osteoarthritis and can communicate well. The study was conducted from February to March 2020, and 100 participants agreed to participate in this survey. The questionnaires used in this study were Pharmacist Identification of New, Diagnostically-confirmed, Osteoarthritis (PhIND-OA) and Roux questionnaires. The results showed that almost three-quarter of total respondents (73%) who were older people living in the Panti Werdha in Surabaya were deemed to have OA based on PhIND-OA questionnaire likely, 61% respondents were deemed to likely have OA based on the Roux questionnaire, and 42% deemed to likely have OA from PhIND-OA and Roux questionnaire both combined. Screening activities including from pharmacist as a healthcare professional is essential in order to detect disease earlier so the deterioration and complication in osteoarthritis can be prevented.
