Abstract

Learning difficulties experienced by dyslexic children require adults, especially parents, to be aware and to take action on handling difficulties experienced by dyslexic children. These challenges will encourage parents to search for information as a form of self-acquisition related to their children condition. Several sources of information, such as libraries, provide some alternatives that can be used in searching for information. Library management often provides services by generalizing the amount of information needed by its users. It actually has affected some users who require more specific information, which in the end have difficulty obtaining their information needs. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of the researcher to analyze information needs of parents of dyslexic children. The analysis was conducted using David Nicholas concept to describe characteristics of information needs, faced by parents of dyslexic children in Surabaya city. This research was carried out using descriptive quantitative method. Surabaya, as the first city in Indonesia to have a library with Dyslexia Corner facility, was chosen as the research location. In this research, non-random sampling (accidental sampling) was used and it obtained 30 respondents. The research results revealed that parents of dyslexic children preferred topics of religious information (100%), hobbies (100%), health (100%), and community friends (100%). The percentage of parents of dyslexic children who used printed information in the form of books was 50%. The percentage of respondents who preferred to use electronic information in the form of social media was 96.7%. The preferred sources of information for parents of dyslexic children are professional/experts, family, internet, and community friends, with entirety percentages was 100%. The percentage of parents of dyslexic children who had information point of view from experts was 73.3%, and they stated that the most quality information was information from experts, which was 96.7%. The percentage of parents of dyslexic children who stated that they needed two or three sources of information to fulfill their information needs was 70%. Furthermore, those parents chose to obtain electronic information (60%), because it was easier to access (50%) than printed or direct information. Those parents also chose to obtain actual information and traditional information simultaneously, depends on information needs they are facing.
