Abstract
Bird voices are influenced by variations of syrinx size and morphology. Anatomy and morphometrical variance of syrinx has been observed in several bird species. Nevertheless, the anatomy and morphometric study about Lovebird’s syrinx has not yet been reported. This study aimed to investigate the syrinx anatomy and morphometric difference in 2-4 months old male and female Lovebird (Agapornis fischeri). A total of 18 Lovebirds were assigned to (Group A) 9 males and (Group B) 9 females euthanized to collect syrinx. Each group represented 2, 3, and 4 months old, respectively. The syrinx organ stained using methylene blue then analyzed the following variables, ie. lateral tympaniform membrane (LTM) dexter et sinister area, paired protrusions (PP) length and trachea diameter using Image J and vernier caliper. The data analyzed using Manova test then followed by Duncan test (p<0.05). The result reveals that syrinx of Lovebirds were tracheal type, possess cartilage modification called tympanic process and paired protrusions and there was no definite difference between age and sex group of Lovebird. On the other hand, the results of morphometric examination represent significant difference (p<0,05) in the LTM variable both age and sex group. In conclusion, the significant difference was found only in LTM area which was wider in female than male Lovebird.
