Abstract
Background Gender identification was a medicolegal issues in the field of forensic science. Many methods can be used to make a determination of sex, one of them by measuring the mental foramen. mental foramen can be clearly seen on the panoramic radiograph. Purpose To know the differences of mental foramen measurement results between men and women observed in panoramic radiographs for sex determination. Materials and Methods This study was conducted on a 32 male and 32 female panoramic radiographs. Measurements were made on the distance between the superior margin of mental foramen to inferior mandibular (S-L) and the distance between the inferior margin of mental foramen to the mandibular inferior (I-L). S-L and the I-L measured on panoramic radioraph that fulfil the sample criteria. Then the results of S-L and the I-L in each group were processed using SPSS. Results In the group of men gained an average distance of S-L was 2,092 cm and the distance of I-L was 1,657 cm. While women's groups obtained a mean distance of S-L was 1,797 cm and the distance of I-L was 1.395 cm. There was significantly difference in S-L and I-L between groups of men and women (P <0.005) according data analysis using SPSS 20 Conclusion The distance between foramen the mental to inferior border of mandibula shows sexual dimorphism, so it can be used for the determination of sex for the purposes of disaster victim identification
