Abstract
Studies revealed that use antibiotics inappropriately could lead to residual and antibiotic resistance in animals. This descriptive study aims to determine the availability of veterinary drugs containing antibiotics are sold freely without a veterinarian's prescription in the pet shops and poultry shops of Bengkulu City. The survey conducted in nine sub-districts showed 13 pet shops and 26 poultry shops available for antibiotics. The types of antibiotics of the 104 drugs found were beta-lactam (3.8%), aminoglycosides (3.8%), chloramphenicol (9.2%), macrolides (18.5%), sulfonamides (28.5%), tetracyclines (33.1%), quinolones (1.5%), and metronidazole (1.5%). Data analysis with chi-square α = 5% showed no significant difference between the pet shop and the poultry shop providing veterinary drugs containing antibiotics without a veterinarian's prescription. The result showed pet shops and poultry shops in Bengkulu City provide veterinary drugs that contain antibiotics freely with a 95% confidence level.
