Abstract
The world is sweeping by the COVID-19 pandemic, where pandemics can cause stress and adolescents are an age group that is vulnerable to stress. During the pandemic, adolescents experience various potential stressors, so they have to do coping. The purpose of this study is to analyze adolescent coping strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research was a quantitative descriptive study that used a survey method and a cross-sectional design. The samples were 397 adolescents, taken by purposive sampling. The data collected include respondent characteristics, potential stressors, primary appraisal, secondary appraisal, stress, and coping. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive analysis and cross-tabulation. The majority of respondents were female (86.4%), 19 years old (32,5%), and currently pursuing undergraduate education (83.6%). Respondents felt that the various types of stressors experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic had the potential to be a source of stress (52.90%). Respondents rated the potential stressor experienced as stressful (50.88%). The majority of respondents had sufficient resources to overcome potential stressors experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic (88.67%). The majority of respondents had moderate (26,70 %) and normal (25,44 %) stress levels. Respondents used problem-focused coping strategies (50,13%) more than emotion-focused coping (49,87%). The problemfocused coping strategies used were active coping, planning, suppression of active competing, and seeking social support for an instrumental reason. Emotion-focused coping strategies used were seeking social support for an emotional reason, positive reinterpretation and growth, and mental disengagement. The proximity of the relationship between potential stressors with coping strategies was moderate (r = 0.33), The closeness of the relationship between the primary appraisal (r = 0.13), secondary appraisal (r = 0.136), and stress (r= 0,100 %) with adolescent coping strategies was very low. Respondents use problem-focused coping strategies more than emotionfocused coping. The proximity of the relationship between potential stressors with coping strategies was moderate; the closeness of the relationship between the primary appraisal, secondary appraisal, and stress with adolescent coping strategies was very low. Adolescents should try to choose and use other coping strategies appropriate to the type of potential stressors. The adolescent must train their skills in coping strategies.
