Abstract
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a nosocomial infection often found in hospitals and increasing every year. This infection is associated with a urinary catheter. The microorganisms that caused UTI can colonize and form biofilms on the surface of the catheter, which is the source of infection and makes infection difficult to treat. This study aims to identify Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli that cause UTI from catheter urine samples in West Nusa Tenggara with standard bacteriological culture techniques and antibiotic sensitivity tests using the Kirby- Bauer diffusion method and the value of optical density from biofilm formation measured by using the Tissue Culture Plate method. The identification showed that bacteria causing UTI were Staphylococcus aureus (43.33%), Escherichia coli (21.67%), followed by Staphylococcus epidermidis (10%), Proteus mirabilis (6.67%), Enterobacter aerogenes (6,67%), Serratica marcescens (5%), Klebsiella sp (3.33%) and Pseudomonas sp (3.33%). Biofilm formation test showed that 20 (33.33%) isolates were no biofilm producer (none), 26 (43.33%) isolates were weak in forming biofilms, 8 (13.33%) isolates were moderate in forming biofilms, and 6 (10%) isolates strongly in forming biofilms. The antibiotic sensitivity test showed that 10 isolates were resistant to amoxycillin, 23 isolates were resistant to ceftriaxone, 21 isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin and 3 isolates were resistant to sulphamethoxazole trimethoprim. Based on statistical analysis, there is a significant correlation between the duration of catheterization and antibiotic sensitivity patterns with biofilm formation.
