Abstract
Andrographis paniculata Nees is considered as the herb of future diabetes mellitus (DM) due to its precious chemical compound, andrographolide. Andrographolide provides in vitro evidence for potential inhibition of α-glucosidase. This study aims to profile the metabolites, andrographolide level, and their capability to inhibit α-glucosidase at three different harvest ages (2, 3, and 4 months) to establish the best harvest time. Fingerprint chromatograms of extracts from different harvest ages exhibited a similar pattern with several familiar peaks, only differing in area and intensity value. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated noticeable and clear discrimination according to their harvest age. The yield of extract and level of andrographolide not contributing parameters significantly influenced the days to harvest, while the highest α-glucosidase inhibition activity occurred two months after sowing. Therefore, A. paniculata should be harvested two months after sowing to produce superior quality plant extracts for further applications by the herbal industries for DM.
