Abstract

Objective There are two objectives of this study. Firstly, to identify the management of medicines and medicinal waste. Secondly, to evaluate the impact of providing education and assistance by community pharmacists for increasing knowledge and awareness of residentials. Method A mixed method study was conducted involving 45 residentials in Suko Sidoarjo from July to November 2020. A convenience sampling was used to recruit participants in collaboration with three local pharmacies in the research area. A questionnaire consisting of 30 question items was used to assess Knowledge Attitude parameter. This study consisted of three phases: pre-intervention phase, intervention phase, and post-intervention phase. At intervention phase, participants were given a series of intervention from education to assistance by pharmacists who have received training, regarding the management of medicines and medicinal waste in the household. KAP assessments were carried out before and one month after the end of the intervention. Furthermore, the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was used to assess the difference between pre-test and post-test result. Post intervention phase involved semi-structured interviews. Participants were selected using maximum variation sampling. The results obtained from quantitative and qualitative research were then analyzed. Results The majority (97. 1 % ) of residents stored medicines in the house with a range of 1 - 5 items of medicine stored in special medicine cabinets or medicine storage box. A small portion (7.2%) of medicines stored were expired. The majority (83.7%) of Objective There are two objectives of this study. Firstly, to identify the management of medicines and medicinal waste. Secondly, to evaluate the impact of providing education and assistance by community pharmacists for increasing knowledge and awareness of residentials. Conclusion Poor drug storage and disposal practice in the household can be improved by providing education and assistance to the community. This might ring an alarm for health professionals particularly the surrounding pharmacists to create an initiative for educating and collecting unused, expired or unwanted medicines from the communities. Pharmacists from the local community pharmacy can be a reference for the residents to obtain information about management of medicines and medicinal waste in the household. The local pharmacy can also play a role in preventing and reducing waste in the pharmaceutical sector with the return unwanted medicines program, resembling similar practice in several other countries. The return unwanted medicines program is a free and safe way for consumers to dispose of unwanted medicines at pharmacies.
