Abstract

This research is about the image of Indonesian urban women in Indonesian film entitled Selamat Pagi, Malam (2014). The current development of the era and technology as well as the social dynamics that occur in urban society faced by women will continue to changes from time to time. This is certainly reflected in one of the cultural artifacts, namely Film. Film is a representation of social and cultural reality in a country within a certain period. This study used semiotics analysis film by Roland Barthes related to the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth. The result shows that there is an upheaval between identity, social norms and society as well as technology that develop from time to time. The content of Selamat Pagi, Malam film mostly consists of the scenes that reproduce the myth of women who can work in the public space, women still have to and are indoctrinated to keep having husbands as women’s nature. Based on these findings, it can be said that the portrayal of urban women in Indonesian cinema at that time was still in an unfinished dialectic. Women are still seen as objects and cannot make choices and have power over themselves.
