Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the immunostimulatory potential of 2% red ginger rhizome powder based on the secretion of immunoglobulin A (IgA), Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) and Interleukin 2 (IL-2) in broiler chickens infected with S. enteritidis bacteria and to compare these potentials with the immunomodulatory activity of a commercial immunomodulatory products containing the Phyllanthus niruri L. (Stimuno® forte). Twenty CP707 day-old broiler chicks (DOC) were divided into 4 treatment groups. Negative control (K-) group was only given standard broiler diet, positive control (K+) group was infected with S. enteritidis, P1 group was given 2% red ginger powder of the total feed and infected with S. enteritidis, and P2 group was given stimuno® forte 13.5 mg / KgBW and infected with S. enteritidis. Blood samples were taken on days 1, 6, 13 and 20 post infection and serum concentrations of interferon-γ (IFN-γ), interleukin-2 (IL-2) and immunoglobulin A (IgA) was analyzed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results of this study indicate that based on the serum concentration data of IFN-γ and IL-2 obtained, administration of 2% red ginger powder do not have potential as an immunostimulant towards the cellular immune response. However, it showed immunostimulatory potential towards the humoral immune response based on the increase of IgA serum concentration.
