Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Aibika (Abelmoschus manihot (L.) Medik) leaf extract cream given topically on density and arrangement of collagen in incisional wound healing on white rats (Rattus norvegicus). Twenty-five male rats with an age of 3 months and body weight of 150-200 gram were divided into 5 groups C-, C+, T1, T2 and T3. C- (rats with normal healthy skin), C+ (rats with incisional wound treated with PVP-I), T1 (rats with incisional wound treated with 12.5% ALEC), T2 (rats with incisional wound treated with 25% ALEC), T3 (rats with incisional wound treated with 50% ALEC). Treatments had been given topically twice a day for 14 days. On 15th day, skin excisions were conducted, and histopathological examination was carried out by scoring of density and arrangement of collagen then analysed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and followed by the Mann-Whitney U test. Microscopic observation on the wound healing process on the density and arrangement of collagen showed that C- does not have significant difference with T1 (p>0.05), but C- has significant difference with C+, T2 and T3 (p<0.05). The best wound healing process on T1 allegedly because of the activity of flavonoid, saponin, and tannin contained in Aibika leaf extract which has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects. The conclusion of this study was Aibika (Abelmoschus manihot (L.) Medik) leaf extract cream with the concentration of 12.5% has been proven to be effective to be used in incisional wound healing.
