Abstract
The aims of this research was to determine the difference for adsorption efficiency of Zn (II) using a mixture of cassava peel (Manihot esculenta) adsorbent, mahogany sawdust waste (Swietenia machrophylla King), and bentonite based on variations of mass composition, pH, and contact time to determine the adsorption kinetics model using the batch method and to determine the characteristic of the adsorbent based on pHpzc and FTIR analysis. The data analysis consisted of two types, namely descriptive analysis presented with graphs and tables, and statistical analysis with the Anova One-way test and Duncan's test at α = 0.05. Variations of mass composition of the adsorbent mixture used ratio 1: 1, 1: 1: 2, and 1.5: 1.5: 1. The optimum adsorbent mixture ratio is 1: 1: 2 with an adsorption efficiency of 84.86%. Variations of pH were pH 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Variations of contact time used were 5, 10, 30, 45, 75, 90, 105, and 120 minutes. The results showed that there was a difference in adsorption efficiency. The optimum pH occurs at pH 6 with an efficiency of 87.95% and the optimum contact time is 105 minutes with an efficiency of 98.18%. The pH pzc value obtained was 5.7. FTIR analysis contained hydroxyl groups (-OH), (C = O), and (C-H) proved that the adsorbent mixture used contained cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose components. The adsorbent mixture also contains (Si-O) and (Al-Si-O) which are tetrahedral silica proving the existence of bentonite. These functional groups can play a role in the adsorption of Zn (II) metal ions. The suitable kinetics model in this study is pseudo second order kinetics.
