Abstract
This study aims to examine the portrayal of ecological imperialism in Richelle Mead’s novel entitled Soundless (2015). The setting of the novel is Ancient China in which the king as the one who ruled the kingdom. The method applied in this study is the qualitative descriptive method, while the theory used to analyze the issue in the novel is Postcolonial Ecocriticism proposed by Huggan and Tiffin, which later focuses on Alfred Crosby’s ecological imperialism by the king, which is dualistic thinking and environmental racism. The result of this study shows that the miserable environment the villager is living in, caused them to lose their hearing for generations and slowly lose their sight. It caused them to live in such challenging conditions because of the king along with the king’s men who drive the villager to be ‘slave’ in order to own all the precious natural resources – the metal that keeps him rich and powerful. The toxic they consume every single day caused them to lose their hearing and vision. Additionally, through the ecological imperialism lens, the dualistic thinking proves how the king sees nature as an object to fulfill his needs by exploiting nature. Furthermore, environmental racism is depicted in the novel. Although the village has a precious natural resource, which is metal, they cannot get an equal exchange between metal and food because of the king’s manipulation. However, the racism triggered the village to do a movement that refers to environmental justice.
