Abstract

The research entitled "Urban Expression in Poem Collection of Karena Cinta Kuat Seperti Maut by Adimas Immanuel: Riffaterre's Semiotic Studies" aims to find expressions in urban life by helping to formulate urban classifications and patterns in a book of poetry entitled Karena Cinta Kuat Seperti Maut. This study utilizes Riffaterre's semiotic theory through several appropriate ways of working, namely reading hermeneutics to determine the indirectness of expression and identification of variants as a model and matrix design that leads to the meaning of the poetry that is able to refer to urban life expressively contained in several curated poetry texts. The results of this study found five urban expressions contained in the collection of poems Karena Cinta Kuat Seperti Maut: (1) sacrifices in urban areas; (2) doubts about urban living; (3) urban social dynamics; (4) urban tragedy; and (5) urban culmination. The five expressions seem to see that urban is a life that is full of sadness and full of happiness. The urban patterns created from various forms of urban expression are found in five poems by emphasizing the subject in the form of the characters me and you “lyrically” as motor figures who do not stop exploring one object after another in the form of urban space as a builder of urban expression, including: (1) interrelationships predications to “Penjala” and “Pedagang” poem; (2) layers of meaning of ‘fish’ in “Penjala” and “Pencari” poem; and (3) cartography of the poignant poetry of “Pejalan,” “Pedagang,” and “Penanya.” In the sequence of patterns, the poem entitled “Pedagang” seems to be a ‘bridge’ that spans between the three patterns. This shows that the meaningfulness of the “Pedagang” poem is able to connect the linkage of predication, the layers of meaning of ‘ikan,’ and the cartography of pain as a condensation of forms of urban expression which are also found in other poems, namely “Penjala,” “Pejalan,” “Pencari,” and “Penanya.”
