Abstract

Hypertension is defined as a continuous increase in arterial blood pressure. The prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia in 2018 showed that 34,1% people had hypertension. In Sidoarjo, hypertension became the third-rankest of ten major diseases at the highest in 2018. In the world, about 50-70% hypertensive patients are not compliant with prescribed drugs. Adherence is a health behavior that can be influenced by several factors, one of them is knowledge. This study was aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge and medication adherence in hypertensive patients at Tanggulangin healthcare center in Sidoarjo. A cross sectional study using purposive sampling was conducted. The knowledge was measured using Hypertension Knowledge-Level Scale (HKLS) and the adherence was measured using Adherence to Refills and Medications Scale (ARMS). About 65 hypertensive patients were participated in this study. Results on knowledge are 60% respondent has good knowledge, 3,1% has less knowldge, and 36,9% has enough knowledge. Whereas the results of adherence is 100% has moderate adherence. The result shows a relationship between knowledge and medication adherence (p=0,007; r= -0,331). It is important to improve the role of pharmacists in community by serving proper counseling, monitoring, and education to improve adherence.
