Abstract

The aims of this paper is to examine Michael Jackson song entitled Black or White, one of the most legendary songs which conveys deep message about racism in the United States that is being criticized by Michael Jackson. As a part of phenomenon in popular culture, the song lyrics and also the video clip as one package brings huge meaning that want to be delivered by the song writer. The writer chooses to use African American Criticism by Henry Louis Gates to analyze Black or White lyrics supported by the video clip. This analysis will be started by focusing on the way protest against American racism is reflected in the song in order to explore the issues raised in the song. An analysis of this research discover that this song bring a powerful meaning about equality, bravery, freedom, and mockery.
