Abstract
Slips of the tongue (SOT) is a psycholinguistics phenomenon that inevitably occurs in most of our daily speech including in formal occasions. One of the formal occasions in which slips of the tongue may occur is in a religion sermon context. This study is aimed to find out the types of SOT and the most frequent one produced in such context by using Fromkin (1973) and Harley (2001) combined theory of thirteen types of SOT. The object of this study is the situation of Friday Islamic Sermons in Nuruzzaman Mosque which is located in Universitas Airlangga. There are six types of slips of the tongue that occur in this occasion, they are haplologies, misderivation, phoneme anticipation, phoneme perseveration, affix deletion, and phoneme deletion. The most frequent slips of the tongue produced by the sermon speakers in Nuruzzaman mosque is phoneme deletion with 24 times, 54.55% of all occurrences of the thirteen types, while misderivation become the least slips of the tongue occurred with one occurrence for each type (2.27 %). Beside those finding, there are also five types other than the thirteen proposed theory. Those types are word deletion, syllable deletion, syllable insertion, phoneme insertion, and phoneme substitution. From the data, the writer found out that all the speakers produced slips of the tongue in several of their utterances. The other thing the writer could obtain from this study is that the slips of the tongue occurred in the speakers of Friday Islamic Sermons in Nuruzzaman mosque are without the correction of the speakers. It was noted that only two occurrences of slips of the tongue that were corrected by the speakers. The situation of the Friday Islamic Sermon which is mostly impromptu or without using sufficient text may be the possible reason of the speaker did not notice their slips of the tongue.
