Abstract

The study examines the main character in Jeff Lindsay’s Darkly Dreaming Dexter. This study discusses the negotiation between his Eros and Thanatos and its influences toward his life which are associated with his childhood trauma, Oedipus complex and legitimacy from his foster father. Freudian psychoanalysis theory will be used as the main theory, especially the discussion of Oedipus complex, Eros and Thanatos and also fixation. This research is a qualitative research where the data is taken from the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter, library research, journals, and other resources which are appropriate in conducting the analysis. This study finds that Dexter’s negotiation between his Eros and Thanatos are associated with his childhood trauma and Oedipus complex. His negotiation process results fixation which gives significant influence towards his sexual, social and career life. His dominant Thanatos influences some aspects of his life not to develop well. He becomes sexually inactive, antisocial person and his career does not develop.
