Abstract

This study attempts to analyze the narrative structure found in the narration of life story of A Madurese widow. This widow’s life story is interesting to be analyzed since she is considered to be the one who is responsible for fulfilling family’s needs. Further, becoming a widow is not easy because widow has complex transitions from a wife to a widow. This condition sometimes brings them back to the past memories with their husband. The main objective of this study is to find out the narrative structure in the participant’s narratives as obtained from the interview session with her and also to investigate a Madurese widow’s narrative structure in Labov’s narrative structure. From the analysis of madurese widow’s narratives, it is expected to find out how she portrays herself and how she reveals the story in such a way that the listener may capture her figure. Therefore, Labov’s narrative structure theory is used as the approach in analyzing the data which consists of six elements of Narrative Structure. This study uses descriptive qualitative method. During the interview process the data was recorded and then transcribed. After that, the data was structured by Labov theory. The writer found two big stories and then divided into sub stories. The final result of this study is showing that in general, a Madurese widow’s life story follows Labov’s theory because of its elements’ presence. However, there are very few of them which are absent in the sub stories that show how it is deviant from the theory.
