Abstract

The Red Badge of Courage written by Stephen Crane is a novel based on American civil war that occurs around 1861 to 1865. It tells us about a young Civil War soldier that desired to become a war hero with his ideal that comes from the book. He faces many trials so that he was able to develop to fulfil the qualities of a soldier. The analysis uses descriptive analysis, applying objective approach provided Edgar V. Roberts‟s theory regarding intrinsic elements. This thesis analyzes the intrinsic elements which are characters and characterization, plot, and theme of the novel. First the writer will introduce the round and flat characters of the novel, followed by analyze Henry's development in the plot of the novel, and finally making a conclusion to find out the theme. In the conclusion, the writer finds out that Henry's experience toward war occurs as his wrong perception of war. He was hoping that by enlisted, he will bestow with the quality of a soldier such as tough, brave, and courageous. Because of that, he has to endure many difficulties during the war. His character develops after he directly experiences a process that gives him the ability to overcome his problems.
