Abstract
Today, the use of curriculum 2013 still becomes a hot issue to be discussed because Anies Baswedan, the minister of primary and secondary education, has stopped the implementation of curriculum 2013 temporarily for the schools that have implemented this curriculum for one semester. Therefore, the teaching techniques used in the newest curriculum and the previous curriculum can be different. This study focuses on identifying the teaching techniques used by the English teacher who uses K-13 and describes the differences between English teaching techniques used in K-13 and KTSP. This study took the English teacher of SMPN 2 Waru as the subject. The data were collected by observation, video recording and interview. The data were analyzed using qualitative description. The result shows that the teaching techniques used by the English teacher using K-13 in SMP Negeri 2 Waru Sidoarjo were repetition drill, small group task, language game, use words in sentences, translation of a literary passage, reading comprehension questions, and question and answer exercise. In addition, there are three differences between the teaching techniques used in KTSP and K-13. First, the use of translation of a literary passage and reading comprehension questions technique is more frequent in KTSP than in K-13. Second, use words in sentences technique is not used in KTSP, but it is used in K-13. Third, scrambled sentences technique is not found in K-13, but it is found in KTSP.
