Abstract
Over the past few decades HFMD (hand, foot, and mouth disease) epidemics have occured in various places and caused a serious proportion of severe complications and deaths in-mostly-children, especially in Asia Pacific region. To date the majority of cases have been noted in China. Some of the parents will have severe neurological complications and die. This disease is caused by enteroviruses. especially Enterovirus 71 (EV71) and Coxsackievirus A16 (CV16). The main signs and symptoms are mouth alcers and skin lesions. The most severe complications are various neurological disturbances, cardiopulmonary failure and pulmonary oedema that mainly caused by EV71. There is no definitive treatment and vaccine for this disease. Contact avoidance and self hygiene are the key of prevention.
