Abstract

Childhood is just once in a lifetime, therefore, parents have to guide their child well. Children are like a plain paper, without scratch or sketch. The environment is finally give them pattern what they will be. The writer is going to analyze the main character of the novel, Totto-chan, a girl in the first elementary school. She quits from the public school, because her teacher thinks that she is naughty and a trouble-maker girl. She is interested in the new environment around her. After she receives in new school, she become a good girl, and finally becomes a popular television star in Japan. The writer uses close reading as the theory, by elaborating literary devices to identify and analyse the character. The writer concludes the physical qualities of Totto-Chan are cute and shows the natural appearance as a child of seven years old. From the mental qualities, she is a talkative and smart girl. She wants both to take and share the information. She does not stop asking until gets the clear information. She also does not stop explaining until her audience understand what she talks about. Totto-Chan also has a good relationship with her parents, her teacher, and all of her friends. Totto-Chan’s friends see Totto-Chan as a nice girl who always help her friends. This novel also contains the moral values such as responsibility, friendship, and respect each other.
