Abstract

Background: A panoramic radiograph is an extraoral radiographic techniques to produce a picture of facial structure includes both jaws. One of the structures seen on panoramic radiographs is the alveolar ridge. Patients with edentulous jaw can get the lowering of the height of alveolar ridge structure due to the loss of all teeth. Lowering of the height of alveolar ridge is slowly physiologic resorption due to the absence of mechanical stimulus transmitted from occlusal force through apical of teeth to the alveolar bone. Loss of all teeth in men and the height of maxillary alveolar ridge can be observed through panoramic radiography. Purpose: The aim of this study was to obtain the value of the maxillary alveolar ridge height through panoramic radiographic in edentulous men patients. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional observational study. This study measured the height of maxillary alveolar ridge using panoramic radiographic observed on 22 men, divided into two groups, dentate and edentulous. Measurements were measured from the height between the most inferior point of infraorbital ridge and alveolar ridge at three points on maxillary, molar point, premolar point and incisor point observed by three observers and then taken the average. Results: The amount of average values in dentate group were higher than edentulous group in each point. Conclusion: The average values of edentulous group were 38,45 mm at molarpoint, 41,53 mm at premolarpoint, and 42,58 mm at incisor point. The dentate group had 50,72 mm at molarpoint, 53,01 mm at premolar point, and 54,15 mm at incisorpoint.
