Abstract
Swear words are known as negative things by the people. Although we know that it is negative and avoided by the culture where we live in it, the people still use the words especially in informal contexts and setting. The use of swear words is especially to express their emotions. The negative taboo words are included in the swear words. Nowadays not only adult and teenagers who used swear words in their speaking. It also happens in the boys and girls of 6th grade of elementary school students in one of non-formal courses in Surabaya. From their way of using swear words, the writer wants to know about swear words are used, the categories, the reasons, and how boys and girls used it in the conversation. This study used the qualitative approach which requires natural settings; the writer wants to see how the students use swear words, the categories, the reasons, and how boys and girls used swear words in the conversation. The writer used the theory of taboo words categories by Andersson, the theory of reason of taboo words by Wardhaugh and theory of language and gender by Pilotti et al, Sumarsono and Partana to analyze the data. The result shows that from seven categories of taboo words which are classified as swear words proposed by Andersson, five types occurred; sexual organs – sexual relations, religion-church, excrement, the physically or mentally disabled, and prostitution. The result also shows that from six reasons of taboo words proposed by Wardhaugh, three reasons caused the student in using swear words. The other result is the boys of 6th grade of elementary school students used swear words more than girls. But both of them use the same strong level of swear words. Although they produced swear words, the writer found from the questionnaire that most of them do not agree in the use of swear words in daily conversation.
