Abstract

Horror of Armageddon is analyzed in this study for it reflects the social anxiety and the fear of society into more widespread manifestation of horror. This study aims to identify how Peter Berg’s film entitled Battleship is categorized as horror of Armageddon. This study is significant in getting better understanding about how the fear of society is reflected in Battleship. The methodological approach used in this study is qualitative approach. The main data is collected from several chosen scenes of the film. The analysis is conducted using Charles Derry’s theory of horror of Armageddon and covers both narrative and non-narrative aspects of the film. The narrative aspect was done by observing and analyzing preferred scenes and also its transcripts which support the elements of horror of Armageddon that are proliferation, besiegement, and death. The non-narrative aspects such as camera shots, camera angle, color, costume and act are analyzed as well in order to strengthen the narrative one. The finding of the study shows that Battleship is categorized as the horror of Armageddon film through the major elements of horror of Armageddon that forms this film. Through close reading on the text, the study also reveals that the film represents and is influenced by the fear of 9/11 terrorist attack as the real human threat creating fear and anxiety of apocalypse in the society.
