Abstract

After the tragedy 9/11, several stereotypes have been attached to Muslim Community. This research attempts to analyze the stereotypes attached to Muslim in The Taqwacores film trough the main characters and several supporting characters to support the analysis. The purposes of this study are to find the representation of Muslim in this film and how the characters challenge it. The method used in doing this analysis is qualitative research by taking several actions related to the issue. The method of data collection is used The Taqwacores film as the primary source and other source from online and books. The method of data analysis used narrative and non-narrative aspects. To conduct the study, the writer will focus on how stereotype happen on the characters trough Stuart Hall’s theory. The theory examines four aspects that is the construction of ‘otherness’ and exclusion, stereotyping and power, the role fantasy, fetishism. Muslim in this film has been attached to negative stereotypes which are aggressive, violent, have caused destruction. The characters try to challenge those stereotypes by showing positive acts. While from the non-narrative aspect, the writer will focuses on Colors, Camera shots, Camera angle and costumes to support the analysis. As the result of this research, the analysis discovers that negative stereotype of Muslim as terrorist is not appropriate and some character in this film showed the positive image as human being.
