Abstract
This study was conducted to analyze gender exclusive speech differences in men’s and women’s speech of BIGREDS Surabaya community, the official Liverpool supporter in Surabaya, in face-to-face interaction. The differences of men’s and women’s speech can be seen from the morphological feature, syntactic feature and lexical feature. The writer used qualitative approach and analyzed five recordings of men’s and women’s speech of BIGREDS Surabaya based on Holmes’s theory of gender exclusive speech differences. Hence, this study observed what kinds of linguistic features occurred only in men’s speech and only in women’s speech of BIGREDS Surabaya. The kind of language used by men and women of BIGREDS Surabaya is Javanese language and Bahasa Indonesia. The result of the study revealed that gender exclusive speech differences exist in BIGREDS Surabaya community through the morphological, syntactic and lexical differences that occurred only in men’s speech and occurred only in women’s speech of BIGREDS Surabaya, in which men mostly used vernacular forms while women mostly used standard form. The exclusive speech form in men’s speech only occurred in the lexical features while the exclusive speech forms in women’s speech occurred in morphological, in syntactic and in lexical feature. Based on the findings, the writer concluded that the choice of speech either in morphological, syntactical or lexical used by men and women might reflect the degree of closeness, machismo, and social status in their community.
