Abstract
This purpose of the study is to examine the types of motivation that most of English learners have and investigate the correlation between language learning motivation and the grammar achievement of the English learners in Basic English Course, Pare English Village. The sixty English learners of Basic English Course completed a motivation questionnaire and answered a grammar exercise. There were thirty two English learners from Candidate of Training Class (CTC) and twenty eight English learners from Training Class (TC). Motivation questionnaire tapped the learners responses to two orientations related to motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Responses to the motivation questionnaire were correlated with grammar proficiency, as determined by a grammar comprehension test. The results indicated that most of the learners in CTC were extrinsically motivated than intrinsically motivated, implying that they learn English because of the external reasons such as getting award, praise, and recognition from their environment. On the other hand, the learners in TC were intrinsically motivated than extrinsically motivated implying that they learn English for internal reasons such as the enjoyment and the satisfaction to do it. Pearson correlations were used to identify the correlation between different kinds of motivation and English grammar achievement. The study found that both Intrinsic Motivation (IM) and Extrinsic Motivation (EM) correlated positively with the learners’ grammar achievement.
