Abstract

Summer depict about the power of a women's struggle for equality and happiness in her life. Beneath the unpromising past, lack of proficiency and opportunities, the willfully spirit of unintended prostitute orphan, slightly able to change her destiny. Dream of better life and freedom become her motivation to pursue her destiny. Although the false savior leave her alone with despair of irresponsible pregnancy, the despised hero appear to reclaim her once more and while buried her own dream she worry no more. Edith Wharton is one of the great American novelist who is magnificent in writing the subject and themes that she really knows well. The writer of this thesis eager to know the main character Charity Royall depicted the gender inequality. In order to discover answer, formal elements applied to analyze through the use of New Criticism. The goal of using Tyson's New Criticism is to improve the understanding while reading the literary texts. To make simplicity of the analysis, the thesis writer divided the analysis into four subchapters. The first three part is the portrayal of Charity Royall as the main character, analysis about the conflicts of the main character of the novel, plot and setting. While last part Charity's depiction the gender inequality. The writer finds out the conflict led Charity to gender inequality from the characterization.
