Abstract

This study investigated the speech function used by the announcers in Guide to Good English program on Hard Rock FM Surabaya. This study had two objectives: (a) to describe what the speech functions of Hard Rock FM radio announcers in Guide to Good in English program, and (b) to describe what speech function most frequently used by Hard Rock FM radio announcers in Guide to Good English program. In conducting this study, the writer uses descriptive qualitative method. The find was taken from audio records based on the three episodes of Guide to Good English program. The writer used Holmes theory (2008) to analyze the data. The data show that there are six types of speech function: expressive function, directive function, referential function, metalinguistic function, poetic function, and phatic or social function. The data also shows that the most frequent speech function is referential function. Besides that, there are some factors that influenced the used of speech function in the data, social factors and social dimensions. The writer eventually concludes from the data that the use of speech function especially referential function was not only causing by the type of the program (Guide to Good English program) which is about informative talk show, but also there are some factors that influence referential function becomes the most frequent speech function.
