Abstract
Erythrocyte deformability is the elasticity of erythrocyte form during its course
through microvasculature to adjust to the diameter of microvasculature, and it can
spontaneously return to its original form without changes in shape and function. Cupping
therapy is a traditional treatment with a principle of blood letting in certain areas on the
back to heal a disease.
This was a quasi-experimental study using non-random pretest-posttest control
group design performed to human beings as the subject of study. By sampling quota, we
obtained 34 subjects, comprising 17 individuals in each group. Data were analyzed
descriptively and analytically using computer. The diffirence of erythrocyte deformability
in each group, which was presented as percentage, was analyzed using t test.
The result ofpaired sample t-test, the p value was found to be 0.001. Therefore, it
can be concluded that the ejfoct of cupping therapy on the increase of erythrocyte
deformability in cigarette smokers in treatment group was highly significant since p <
0. 05. The result of independent t-test revealed p value of 0. 002. Since the p value was <
0. 05, the effect of cupping therapy on the increase of erythrocyte deformability in
cigarette smokers in control and treatment groups at final observation had significant
difference. In conclusion, cupping therapy has effocto in the increase of erythrocyte
deformability in cigarette smokers.
Cigarette smoking in certain quantity and time may reduce the action capacity of
the erythrocytes to pass microvasculature to deliver oxygen to cellular level. Cupping
therapy can be applied as a therapy to increase the capacity of erythrocyte to pass the
microvasculature as it has been proved to be able to increase erythrocyte deformability.
The value of erythrocyte deformabi/ity can be increased more if the subjects cease to
smoke.
