Abstract

About 80% all the deliveries in Indonesia occur out side the medical service and facilities. Consequently the perinatal and maternal mortality rates are understandably quite high. However, not considering the present geographical and resource limitations, substantial proportions ot these perinatal and maternal deaths could be prevented by measures in the overall system at the community level. Thus, it is clearly very important to develop risk approach by using a practical, valid, and reliable methods tor i dentifying and managing high risk pregnancies at the vil lage level with a proper good referrals and appr opriate medical facilities. A risk approach with a simple predictive scoring technique tor the antepartu~ identitication ot the tetus at risk h ad been applied t o 2944 pregnancies in area A and 1073 pregnancies i n area B in Sidoarjo regency, East 3ava Province. Area A is the research area where direc t intervention or treatment with a training program to 297 PKK (Family Welfare Movement) by the investigator. While in area B, the 182 PKK members were treated indirectly by the local mi dwives with their knowledge and skills given by the investigator using the eaae system and instruments .
