Abstract

T current approach of fine needle aspiration biopsy cytology (FNAC) diagnosis of the thyroid nodule poses difficulties to differentiate follicular adenona, follicular carcinoma and some cases of adenomatous goiter. The FNAC smears if follicular adenoma and follicular carcinoma have the same appearrence such as hypercellularity, present of microfollicle structure and follicular pattern with s: ncytium. It is vcry difficult to differentiate follicular adenoma and follicul tr carcinoma using the morphological cellular arrangement approach. False negative and false positive cases are present and thc diagnostic accuracy is low. This current approach of FNAC is based on morphological cellular an-angement of the asp rate. The aim of this research is to improve the diagnosic accuracy of the FNAC of thyroid nodule using morphometric and ccllular morphofunctional approalies. The morphometric and cellular morphofunctional approaches were uscd tc. quantify the morphological thyroid cells aspirate, cellular DNA content and pr;>liferative activity of the thyroid follicular cells. Cell cycic analysis and AgNOlts reaction were done to detennine proliferative activity of the cells. The method of this research is a combination of obscrvational (cross section31/ transversal analytical) and quasi experimental studics. total of 193 thyroid aspirates (FNAC) with histopathological confirmed diagnosis, consisting of 58 follicular adenoma, 40 follicular carcinoma, 33 papilla y carcinoma, 8 undifferentiated carcinoma and 54 cases of adenomatous goitcr, was analyzcd using "interactive video overlay system". Eleven morplb)metric nuclear variables were selected for analysis. These variables were nuclear size factors (nuclear area, nuclear diameter, nuclear perimeter, short axis.
