Abstract

Thirty-eight postmenopausal women with vaginal atrophy (6, natural menopause and 32, artificial menopause) with or without vaginal complaints, who had been treated with intravaginal cream containing 0.5 mg Estriol everyday during 3 weeks, followed by 0.5 mg Estriol twice a week during 5 weeks. Effects on maturation index (MI), maturation value (MV), cervical mucus parameters (Ferning, Spinnbarkeit), Estradiol (E2), Estriol (E3), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Prolactine (PRL), Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) were studied in 38 cases at the end of the 3rd week and the 8th week after treatment. Endometrial biopsies at pretreatment and at the end of 8th week were obtained from 6 patients. Out of 18 cases with complaints, in 17 cases (94.48%) the complaints creased after 3 weeks of treatment. MV increased clearly, slight to moderate effects on Ferning/Spinnbarkeit. E3 increased after 8 weeks of treatment. Slight depression in LH and no change of FSH, PRL and SHBG. Endometrium was atrophied after 8 weeks of treatment. Side effects encountered were slight, and disappeared spontaneously without treatment.
