Abstract
The infectious disease HIV/AIDS is a global health problem. Patient diagnosed with HIV/AIDS experience unbearable psychological and psychosocial self-conceot. Health education on family support is expected to be able to alleviate this stressor in patiens with HIV/AIDS. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of health education on family support in improving self-concept among HIV/AIDS patient.
This was a pra-experimental study using One Group Pretest-Postest design. The population was family with HIV/AIDS treated at UPIPI, Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. Sample size was 22 responden who met the dependent variables were family support and self-concept among HIV/AIDS patients. Data were collected using questionnaire and observation, and analiyzed by Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with significance level of less than 0.05.
The result showed that before intervention the family support was found to be inadequate in 63.6% and moderate in 36.4% of the respondents. After intervention, there was an increase. Moderate support was found in 45.5% and adequate support in 40.9%. There was inadequate family support. Regarding self concept, before the intervention 81.8% of the respondents had inadequate self-concept an 18.2 of them had moderate self-concept. After intervention the proportion was 72.7% had moderate self-concept and 4.54% had adequate self-concept. The conclusion, health education on family support has effect in obtaining family support in improving the self-concept.
