Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to known the success rate of immediate autotransplantation of thyroid tissue in rabbit. Design: This was an experimental study, with post test only control group design, using rabbit as laboratory animal(Oryclalagus Cuniculus). Hemithyroidectomy was performed on 10 rabbits, thyroid samples were divided into 2 groups, the first groups was immediately fixed in formalin for histopathologic examination, the other groups was implanted in the lower extremities muscle. After 28 days, the second groups was excised for histopathologic examination. The results of histopathologic examination of both groups were compared. Results: Histopathologic examination the autotransplant of thyroid tissue in lower extremities muscle of the rabbit demonstrated that thyroid tissue was viable, with a layer of short cuboidal epithelium of follicles containing colloid. Conclusions: Immediate procedure of thyroid tissue autotransplantation in lower extremities muscle of rabbits yielded viable follicles containing colloid. No histopathologic difference was encountered between the fresh and autotransplant thyroid tissues.
