Thesis thesis, UNIVERSITAS AIRLANGGA.
Abstract
In the year 2008, the city ofBau-Ball, the prevalence ofleprosy was 3.3/10,000 (>lItO,OOO population) from 127,743 populations. The proportion of leprosy in children under 15 years old tends to increase from one year to another. Therefore, it remains a public health problem. The objective of this study was to compare leprosy seropositive in elementary school children living in high prevalence endemic area to those living in low prevalence endemic area in the city of Bau-Ball, by serologically examining anti-PGL-l IgM antibody specific to leprosy bacteria This study used cross-sectional analytic observational design. Location was detennined based on the data from Health Office, Bau-Bau. Samples were taken using purposive sampling. According to the inclusion criteria, there were 85 samples who were willing for blood sampling. Fouriy-iwo samples were taken from the students of SDN 2 Bone-Bone (high prevalence endemic area) and 43 samples from the students of SON 1 Liabuku (low prevalence endemic area). Blood on Whotmann paper was made into even and dry circles. Thereafter, anti-PGL-l IgM level was examined using indirect ELISA technique with cut off 605 ulml. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test for seropositivity comparative test. The result of examination to 85 samples showed that 33 (38.8%) of the children were seropositive, and among 42 childre~ 12 were seropositive (28.6%). They were from high prevalence endemic area. Among 43 children, 21 (48.8%) from low prevalence endemic area. It can be concluded that there was no significant difference in leprosy seropositiveness between elementary school children in high prevalence endemic area and those in low prevalence (p = 0.090 > p 0.05). Leprosy seropositivity in low prevalence endemic area showed higher rate.
