Abstract

Povidone iodine 10% frequently used for incision treatment because it acts as a strong anti-mycobacterium. However it has a toxicogenic effect both on fibroblast and leukocyte, inhibiting neutrophile migration and decreasing monocyte cell. Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a fruit that contains enzyme bromelain, vitamin A, and vitamin C, recognized to be efficacious as an antiinflamasi, antioxidant, increasing fibroblast, and epithelial cell differentiation. This study was aimed to know the differences between pineapple (Ananas comosus) and povidone iodine 10% on incision wound healing process. Design used in this study was true experimental design. The samples were 27 guinea pigs divided randomizely into three group. The groups were control group, pineapple (Ananas comosus) group, and povidone iodine 10% group. The independent variables were the using of pineapple (Ananas comosus) and povidone iodine 10%. The dependent variables were inflammation phase (erythema, oedema, wound fluid) and proliferation phase (granulation and incision edge unification) which were observed in the 2rd, 4th, 6th days. Data were collected using observation paper based on the sign of inflammation and proliferation. Data were then analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and Kruskal-wallis test with level of significance α ≤ 0,05. Results showed that there were differences between pineapple (Ananas comosus) and povidone iodine 10% in erythema (p = 0,00) and oedema (p = 0,00) at 2rd day and erythema (p = 0,00) and oedema (p = 0,00) at 4th day, granulation (p  0,05) and incision edge unification (p  0,05). It can be concluded that the using of pineapple (Ananas comosus) was more effective than povidone iodine 10% in incision wound healing, increasing proliferation and reduce any infection risks. Further studies involved microscopic observation of collagen, PMN cell (neutrophile), lymphocyte and monocyte cell are needed.
