Abstract

Work stress is a possible situation that might be happened to all human especially the workers within an organization or a company. One of the jobs with a work stress risk is a nurse. Nurses in a hospital often suffer with stress caused by several factors. Two of these factors are the work relationship between nurse and patient and the work relationship between the nurse and their work place. The stress condition even worse if the nurse work in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) department. A long term period of stress will cause a burnout e.g a physical and emotional fatigue. The main purpose of this research was to identify the level of work stress and the level of burnout and also to analyze the relationship between work stress and burnout of ICU nurses in Adi Husada Undaan Wetan Surabaya Hospital. This research was used a cross sectional approach. Samples were 35 nurses of ICU department of Adi Husada Undaan Wetan Surabaya Hospital. The independent variable was work stress and dependent variable was burnout of ICUnurses. Data were selected through questionaire. Statistic test was used a Spearman’s Rho which showed that p = 0.01 it means that was a correlation between work stress and burnout of ICU nurses in Adi Husada Undaan Wetan Surabaya Hospital. A correlation coefficien r = 0.635 indicated a strong correlation which meansthe greater the work stress level then the higher the burnout level of ICU nurses. The result showed that the level of work stress of ICU nurses were influenced by their work duration and their involvement in ICU training while the burnout level was influenced by age factor. Work stress level and burnout level have a significant relationship, therefore, it is necessary to implement some concrete steps to minimize the work stress level and the burnout level.
